Planning a Trip

  • When planning your trip, designate one place to hold all travel documents. It can be a folder, a tray, even a shoe box. In it place your passport, maps, brochures, e-ticket copies, travel confirmations, etc. and keep everything together.
  • How long should you stay? My rule of thumb is one day per hour of flight time at a minimum.
For example, NY to Paris is approximately 6 hours, so plan at least 6 days; NY to Orlando is approximately 2 hours, so plan at least a weekend.
  • If you don't want to lug an entire guide book with you, photocopy only those pages applicable to your trip. Staple them together and keep in your wallet or purse.
  • Photocopy your passport, travel confirmations, itinerary and any phone numbers where you can be reached. Leave a copy with a friend.

    Before You Leave

  • You'll need a reliable watch, so replace the battery if needed and replace the band if it's raggedy.
  • Aching feet can put a real damper on a trip, so pack comfortable shoes. If you buy new shoes for your trip, break them in a few weeks before you leave. Also, slip in some cushion insoles for extra comfort.
  • Always carry American Express travelers cheques, and do not take chances with other companies. If your cheques should be stolen you will have the peace of mind knowing they can be replaced virtually anywhere
  • Pack a first aid kit. You can purchase a ready made kit (displayed below in Recommended Gear), or just take a zippered pouch and fill with bandaids, antibiotic ointment, moleskin, bug repellant (check army-navy stores), and anti-itch cream such as cortisone.
  • For a quick energy boost, pack Emergen-C, a vitamin-packed powder you mix with about 2/3 cup of water. It's available in several fruity flavors, and comes in handy small packets (see below in Recommended Gear)
  • If you don't speak the country's language, consider packing Kwik Point, a laminated fold-out "pictures directory" of everything a traveler could possibly need. Available at Magellans.
  • To minimize jet lag, try No Jet Lag, pleasant-tasting chewable tablets (see below in Recommended Gear)
  • Clean your refrigerator, and throw out anything that may rot while you're away. Few things are worse than returning home to a horrible stench!
  • Be sure you have food for when you return as you'll most likely be exhausted and will not feel like grocery shopping. Non-perishables like pasta and frozen food work well. Have food for the day you return, as well as breakfast the next day.

    While You're There

  • Here's an easy way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 2 and add 30. The result will be close by a degree or two.
    For example, 30 degrees C = 90 degrees F (30 x 2 = 60, 60 + 30 = 90).
  • Don't tire yourself out siteseeing! Otherwise you'll return home from your vacation in desperate need of a vacation.
A good rule of thumb is no more than 1-2 travel sites per day, or alternate siteseeing with R&R.
  • Always drink plenty of water.
  • Never leave your hotel without a map of where you're going, water, sunscreen, and your first aid kit (mentioned above). Other items to have handy include your watch, cushion insoles, and health snacks (such as protein bars, Emergen-C, yogurt, etc)
  • Keep it light and mail home what you no longer need. All you need is a box, tape, and some crumpled newspaper. Pack up what you no longer need and send it home!
  • Beware of "Closed on Sundays", especially in predominantly Catholic countries. Take care of any errands by end of the day Saturday.

    Frequent Travelers

  • Designate one place to hold all travel paraphenalia, such as maps, brochures, unused coins from trips, etc.
  • When toiletries are down to about one week's supply, throw then in your travel stash (mentioned above). They'll be perfect for your next trip!
  • Personally, I love Expedia. There are many reasons they're my favorite, but the best is they often offer coupons for $50, $100, and $200 good toward your next trip. So if you travel often, sign up with Expedia!
  • For travel funds, open an high-yield savings account, such as with ING or HSBC, and have money automatically invested monthly or weekly. With compounded interest, your savings will grow over time and you'll have handy spending money for your next trip.
  • Get a Delta Sky Miles account and start accumulating Frequent Flyer Miles.
