From the Air

These 2 photos were taken from the airplane. I was flying from Phoenix to Salt Lake City - unfortunately the window was filthy, but you can see the red patch that is Sedona
 :

Sedona

map Rust, olive green and sky blue are the colors of Sedona...Paradoxically dry yet lush, peaceful yet vibrant with energy.

This beautiful town is known for its mysterious vortexes and brilliant, striking red rock formations including Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock and Boynton Canyon.

Sedona Approaching Sedona from the highway. Thrilling!!
Sedona A bit closer. The scenery is awe-inspiring

Sedona - Bell Rock

Bell Rock Bell Rock

Driving around a bend on highway 179, Bell Rock suddenly makes its appearance. It seems surreal - more like a hollywood movie set...

Bell Rock Hiking toward Bell Rock. It seems so much smaller in the photo, but really it's a mountain!
Red Rock View from mid-level of Bell Rock - yes, you can actually climb the formations
Bell Rock Climbing higher...
with one hand holding water, the other protecting my camera. What a way to build thigh muscles!
Bell Rock Taking a breather on a flat stretch, looking westward. This is undoubtably the best view in all of Sedona (IMHO)
Bell Rock ...and looking eastward
Bell Rock ...and turning around. By now the sun was starting to set casting a beautiful golden glow on the warm rock.

I could've kept climbing, but at this point it was getting steep.

Bell Rock Same westward view, but a closeup of the purple-ish hued rock

Sedona - Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock Impending monsoon over Cathedral Rock
Cathedral Rock On a much better day. The sparkling creek adds so much to the scene (not to mention the cooling effect in 100+ degree heat!)

Sedona - Airport Mesa

Red Rock Westward view from Airport Mesa
Bell Rock Turning around to look eastward at a panoramic view of the amazing red rock formations.

That's Courthouse Rock on the left and Bell Rock at center.

Red Rock While in Sedona, I opted for a 15 min helicopter ride.
I'm so happy I did - what pure joy it was to fly over this fascinating terrain, with Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' wafting through the headset speakers...
Red Rock Sunset over Sedona, viewed from atop Airport Mesa

Sedona - Boynton Canyon

Red Rock Boynton Canyon
Red Rock This bedknob-shaped formation at Boynton Canyon is known as the Kachinas woman
Boynton Canyon Climbing higher and higher, following a barely visible dirt trail
Boynton Canyon Almost to the top. Looking down, you can see the road slicing through the dry terrain
Boynton Canyon Finally at the top enjoying the vast expanse of the terrain. Oh I love Sedona!!
Boynton Canyon A slightly different view - this one with greenery framing the bottom

Sedona - Chapel of the Holy Cross

Chapel The Chapel is built into the red rock...
Chapel ...a winding pathway takes you up

Oak Creek Canyon

Red Rock About 1 hour north of Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon Overlook, offering
a breathtaking view of a lush valley of pine trees.
Red Rock Sun setting into the crevice...

Notice the highway that winds and winds its way up the mountain
- don't forget your Dramamine!

Red Rock Looking down, you can just barely see the tiny strip of highway slicing through the pine forest.
